Agriculture is the back bone of Chickmagalur district economy besides providing a largest source of employment to rural population.  The district situated in the Western Ghats region of Karnataka with a latitude of 12 57 to 13 52 and longitude of 75 7 to 75 20 and famous of cultivation of coffee.The district comprises of 7 taluks of which Kadur taluk comes under  Central Dry Zone no. 4. Tarikere comes under southern transition zone No.7 and rest of the taluks come under Hilly Zone no.22

Major rivers are Tunga, Badra, Netravathi, Vedhavathi and Hemavathi.  The mean annual rain fall varies from lowest 600 mm in Kadur taluk to more than 4000 mm in Sringeri taluk.  Average annual rainfall is 1900 mm.  Soil types of the district are red, sandy loams, shallow to medium black soil and red clay loams.  PH of the soil varies from 5 in the malnad taluks to maximum of 8 in the dry traits of Kadur and Tarikere taluks. 

Agricultural production in the district is spread over three seasons - namely Kharif, Rabi and Summer.  District is suitable for cultivation of different types of crops.  Important crops grown are cereals, viz. rice, ragi, jowar, maize and minor millets, pulses like red gram, horse gram, green gram, avare, black gram and Bengal gram. Oil seeds like ground nut, sesamum, sunflower , castor, saf flower  and nizer. Commercial crops like sugarcane, cotton, and tobacco.  Plantation crops like coffee, tea, areca nut and coconut are also available..

The district has obtained a population of 12 lakhs and  the district has achieved self sufficiency in food grains.  In the case of pulses, only about 50% of the requirement is produced. With respect to oil seeds there is a marginal short fall.  There is no short fall in case of sugar.

Organizational Setup

Major Schemes Implemented

In addition to these schemes, department is maintaining the soil health by analysing the soil samples collected from the farmer's field with nominal cost. Conducting trainings to farmers and farm women on modern agricultural technology for a duration of three months in in Agriculture Training Centre.  Enforcement of seed act, insecticide act and fertiliser control order inculcating healthy competitive spirit among the farmers.  Awards are given to farmers who achieves record yields in the crops offered for competition at state, district and taluk levels.

Further department is encouraging the farmers to adopt 'RASHTRIYA KRISHI BHIMA YOJANA' (RKBY) to provide insurance coverage and financial support to farmers in the event of crop failures due to pests, diseases and natural calamities to stabilise farm yields, to encourage the farmers to adopt progressive farming practices.
